Framingham, Massachusetts




Framingham is one of Boston's twenty-two suburbs and is the fifth largest municipality in MA. Waltham, MA is a city found in Middlesex County and the MetroWest subregion of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The population of the city proper in Massachusetts is 72,362, which is 14th most populous. The city covers 25 square miles with a 2020 population of 72,362. The residents voted in favor of adopting a charter to transition from a representative town meeting system to a mayor-council government in April 2017. The municipality transitioned to city status on January 1, 2018.



Framingham first attempted home rule in 1967. On April 4th, 2017, voters finally approved the Charter for Municipality of Framingham, which went into effect on January 1st, 2018.


Elections are held every two years in November and November 2019. The voting system will help to elect a full-time mayor, with a four-year term, an 11 member city council who are elected according to their district’s population size which has either 2 year or 4 year terms. The mayor replaced the Board of Selectmen as the chief executive and the City Council replaced Representative Town Meeting. The legislative body is now composed of seven members. The mayor and at-large councilors are limited to a maximum of three consecutive terms and district councilors are limited to six consecutive terms.
